- Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Sexual abuses in the Peruvian ecclesial environment: Sexual abuses in the Ecuadorian ecclesial environment: The Bolivian case(Taylor and Francis, 2024-01-01)Sexual, psychological, and physical violence, particularly against vulnerable populations, is a pervasive problem in Ecuador and Peru, existing not only within families but also in educational, public, and ecclesiastical spheres. Research into abuse within the Catholic Church has been scarce, primarily taking the form of journalistic reports rather than academic studies. This chapter endeavors to analyze the incidence of abuse within the Ecuadorian and Peruvian Church. This will be achieved by delving into select emblematic cases, evaluating advancements and constraints in preventive measures, and pinpointing challenges in establishing safe environments. The objective is to foster an enhanced comprehension of this phenomenon. In its conclusion, the chapter delves into the most recent scandal in Bolivia, prompting questions about potential shifts in attitudes, particularly in countries where most victims continue to choose silence regarding their experiences. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Abuse in the Latin American Church: An evolving crisis at the core of Catholicism(Taylor and Francis, 2024-01-01)This book addresses the crisis of sexual abuse in the Roman Catholic Church in Latin America, the region of the world with the highest percentage of Catholics. Bringing together research from across the continent, it demonstrates that abuse within the Church is indeed a global phenomenon, though abuses have taken different forms according to varying sociocultural contexts. With attention to abuses committed against children, women and vulnerable adults - by both men and women - within the settings of parishes, new religious movements and international religious organizations, it also raises questions of justice, asking how to assess the suffering of victims, how to deal with abusers and how to prevent abuses. It will therefore be of interest to scholars of religious studies, sociology, Latin American studies, criminology, theology, and religious leaders with interests in the abuses and scandals that have been revealed in the worldwide Church. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Clericalism in its Latin-American variant(Taylor and Francis, 2024-01-01)Research developed in the northern hemisphere on the abuse of power, conscience, and sexuality in the Church concludes that clericalism, as a perversion of the exercise of authority, is primarily responsible for the crisis, a perspective shared by Pope Francis. This phenomenon is not merely a result of individual shortcomings; rather, it thrives due to systemic elements ingrained within the institution. Certain components of clericalism are universal but other traits are influenced by the unique social and cultural context of individual regions. This chapter proposes to address a critical gap by analyzing and focusing on clericalism in its Latin-American version. Several factors, such as the prestige of the Church, its involvement in highly popular social projects, the weakness (and at times, corruption) of government institutions, the discretionary handling of resources (in particular financial), machismo, cultural tendencies towards authoritarianism, and the Europeanization of seminary formations, transform priests into exceptional beings and exacerbate their monarch-style power over passive lay people. Of particular significance is the aura of sanctity that the sacrament of ordination carries, taking on new dimensions in the context of Latin-American “enchanted modernity.” Within this framework, priests are perceived as bearers of powerful blessings, akin to almost divine entities. This perception has witnessed a recent reinforcement, further solidifying this trend. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, A tolerant familiarity with the illicit: The Catholic sexual imagination and its role in the abuse crisis(Taylor and Francis, 2024-01-01)The argument of this chapter is that the sexual abuse crisis in the Catholic Church is not the result of the egregious crimes of individual abusers. Rather, the crisis is a systemic problem that depends on a uniquely Catholic way of imagining the relationships between God, power, and sexual morality. I call this understanding the “Catholic sexual imagination.” Its main components are as follows: first, the almost exclusive identification of a holy life with consecrated celibacy/virginity. Second, a gendered hierarchy of holiness within the consecrated life. Third, a fierce defense of the institution of the priesthood over the moral standing of the priest. Lastly, the fear of scandal and the obsession with the Church’s (appearance of) moral and spiritual integrity. In order to demonstrate this, the chapter is divided in two sections. First, I focus on the formation of the Catholic sexual imagination by identifying its genesis in some key ideas about gender, purity, and power in antiquity. Second, I examine the case of the Jesuit Alfonso Pedrajas in Bolivia to show that his case reproduces widespread patterns of abuse in the Catholic Church, patterns that become more intelligible through the analysis of the Catholic sexual imagination.1 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
