N2 - The study evaluates the adequacy of the Roberts and Berry (1985) model to the strategic selection of entrance modes into new businesses, in the Brazilian context, discussing the optimum situations for selecting these strategies. It adopts one extended research, using a larger number and more variety of corporate venturing strategies compared to the original study. The incorporated case study of one diversified Brazilian leader in the petrochemical sector, use interviews and questionnaires for collecting data. It analyzes in depth 30 episodes verifying the adequacy to the model. The findings show that data fitted very well to the model, reaching 88,5 % adherence. The critical factors for selection and performance of the strategic choice were also accessed, suggesting the validity of the model in the sector analyzed. The inclusion of the merger and vertical integration strategies are proposed. Finally, a possible framework to technological partnerships is discussed. The research contributes to the refinement and discussion of a tool of easy application and great relevance for the business community, helping the complex corporate venturing strategies' decision making.
