Flexible risers are one of the main components used during offshore oil & gas production. This component undergoes environment dynamic loads like waves, currents, VIV and also transient loads coming from marine operations. The effect of these loads against the flexible riser is crucial to study in order to keep the integrity of the riser structure. Severe slugging is a cyclic dynamic phenomenon which also occurs during offshore oil & gas production. This phenomenon is characterized for large and fast displacement of gas and liquid masses through the flexible riser. Thus the severe slugging imposing dynamic loads to the riser structure modifying its geometrical configuration. The dynamic variation of the riser profile can compromise the integrity of its structure due to the large dynamic deformations originated by this phenomenon. Additionally, the behavior of the severe slugging depends on the riser profile, so slug flow - riser dynamics is a coupled phenomenon. In this work a numerical approach of this fluid - structure interaction FSI is carried out using a coupled of systems composed by a program which simulates severe slugging process working simultaneously with a program for marine riser dynamics. Results present large displacement and pressure increment well as significant variations on the effective tension, axial and hope stresses.
