Resumen
The Virgin of Copacabana is the main title of Mary in Bolivia. Its history was fixed for the first time in the Historia del Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Copacabana (1621) by the Augustinian friar Alonso Ramos Gavilán. In 2012, the Peruvian director Leónidas Zegarra premiered Virgen de Copacabana: su historia y milagros. After examining Zegarra’s career and the place that this film takes in his filmography, this article studies the representation of the miraculous nature of the Virgin and the Aymara culture in said film, which is contrasted with the images fixed on these aspects by Ramos Gavilán in his chronicle.
