Resumen

Immediately after the political independence of Peru in 1824, the South American continent opened its doors to Italian opera, with particular attention to the work of Gioacchino Rossini. His music did not necessarily arrive through opera companies but through overtures arranged for war bands and interpreted in public spaces and social dancing, which finally created a market for the construction of new theaters eager to receive professional opera companies. The phenomenon produced by Rossini's work not only transformed the aural spaces of the cities but also profoundly affected local composers, who adapted various elements into their own schools and traditions. In some Andean cities, such as the province of Arequipa, this influence can be found in the production of works written for specific uses far removed from the theater, but in which it is possible to observe the assimilation of Rossini's style through the adaptation of formal and melodic models in genres less cultivated by the Italian composer, such as liturgic and symphonic music. Based on the study of sacred and symphonic music by Lorenzo Rojas (1806-1865), violinist and Chapel Master of the Cathedral of Arequipa, I explore the assimilation and reuse of the Rossinian language in American territories, where functionality and meaning are transformed by pursuing ideals of modernity, without renouncing to local traditions and uses that had gained public prestige and acceptance.
