La fuente de San Bartolomé en Armenia de Cristóbal de Monroy y Silva y su relación con Las cadenas del Demonio de Pedro Calderón de la Barca

In this article, I will attempt to identify the primary source on which Cristóbal de Monroy may have based his composition of San Bartolomé en Armenia. This was not the only time that the life and martyrdom of the apostle were staged. Among other representations, Calderón de la Barca’s dramatization in Las cadenas del Demonio stands out. Based on the identification of parallel passages and coincidences between these ‘comedias’ and other hagiographic texts, I seek to determine the most likely source for the writing of San Bartolomé en Armenia and elucidate the relationship between it and the play authored by Calderón.
