Resumen

The independence of Peru has always been understood as a process that affected the entire country in a homogeneous and similar way. This view responds to a national scheme that overlooks the fact that the Spanish Empire accepted and organized the intense sociocultural difference existing in its territory. Moreover, in a space like the Viceroyalty of Peru, inheritor of complex native societies that conditioned the behavior of different ethnic groups in its territory, this was even more pronounced. For instance, the northern part of Peru, whose options for independence were explained more in the long term than in the short term, during the years of the emancipatory struggles, as is the traditional position of the analysis of Peruvian independence. Therefore, it is interesting to analyze the particular situation of northern Peru and the set of long-term situations that combine into a constant but continuous and growing discontent that ends up exploding during the years of independence.
