Resumen

Figures about Quechua in the Peruvian 2017 census are studied in this paper. It analyses the quantity and proportionality of Quechua speakers, the relationship between these figures and those linked with ethnic self-identification, the use of descriptive categories, Quechua distribution on the regions, provinces, and districts of the country, and, finally, the problems posited by the census form. Although the trends towards growth and fall in the amount of speakers can significantly vary in the regional, provincial and even district levels, the study stresses that there are some geographical pockets that sustain the vitality of the language. Regarding Quechua I or Huáihuash, this can be seen in the provincial level, in the Eastern region of Áncash, and in the Quechua II or Yúngay case, this is shown in the regional level: regions (departamentos) of Apurímac, Huancavelica, Ayacucho, and Cusco maintain the indigenous language in use. Quechua figures in the city of Lima are also stressed.
