Resumen

Cuba has extensive experience in the development of the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries, created by Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, leader of the Cuban Revolution. The historical progress of this sector is marked by several milestones, starting with the creation of the National Center for Scientific Research in 1965, the constitution of the Biological Front in 1981, that turned into the Scientific Pole of Western Havana in 1992, the constitution of QUIMEFA in 2001 and the creation of the BioCubaFarma Business Group, in 2012. Throughout these years, important results have been achieved for the health of the Cuban people. Currently, the biopharmaceutical industry is consolidating itself as an emerging sector of the knowledge economy in our country. The international scientific community recognizes the progress made by Cuba in this sector, which has had its maximum expression in the confrontation to the COVID-19 pandemic, especially in the development of safe and effective vaccines against this disease.
