Understanding the inequality impacts of health PPPs in Middle-Income Countries

As countries strive to fulfil the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, the push for universal health coverage (UHC) has become a central feature of global health policy. One element has been a reiteration of the role of the private sector through a diverse range of financing mechanisms including Public Private Partnerships (PPPs). However, this poses significant challenges for governments because research indicates adverse outcomes for the right to health as a consequence of healthcare privatisation. The emphasis on commercial imperatives within PPPs has been shown to undermine the right to health, for example by using up public funds and exacerbating inequalities when PPP hospitals are located in urban centres and rural areas remain underserved. PPPs affect equity in different locations in different ways but development actors promoting PPPs tend use a ‘one size fits all’ PPP model. To counter this, a key feature of this network is the opportunity to unite experts from across Latin America, Africa and Asia to document and compare experiences of health sector PPPs across Middle Income Countries. Building on this collaboration, the network will construct a comparative research agenda, using four workshops to refine the knowledge gaps to be addressed. Work includes identifying the full range of ways in which PPPs affect heath equality in the countries represented, learning from existing experiences of using human rights-based approaches to PPPs and moving

Fortalecer la comprensión de los impactos en la igualdad de las asociaciones público-privadas (APP) en salud en países de ingresos medios.

1. El proyecto ofrecerá a los individuos de la red la oportunidad de trabajar en un equipo multidisciplinario de varios países, compartiendo aspectos críticos, enfoques y aportando nuevas perspectivas a los desafíos de larga data en materia de salud y desarrollo. 2. La red promoverá Intercambiar conocimientos sobre la UHC y traer nuevas asociaciones a nuestras instituciones académicas, creando oportunidades futuras para una respuesta colaborativa a los desafíos globales de la investigación.

Realización de talleres en marzo del 2024.

1. Participación de aproximadamente 10 investigadores expertos en el tema del proyecto. 2. Difusión y discusión del conocimiento generado en el proyecto.
