The diplomatic mission of José Antonio de Lavalle in Brazil and the neutralization of the Triple Alliance in the War of the Pacific (1879–1880)

The formation of alliances during the Pacific War (1879-1883) is a subject that requires further study. An attempt to carry out a coalition was the initiative taken by Chile, through the diplomatic mission entrusted to José Victorino Lastarria to achieve in 1879 the adhesion of the Emperor of Brazil Pedro II and President Lorenzo Latorre of Uruguay, countries that had shown prone to evaluating a triple alliance proposal, they had interests in the Southern Cone and all had in common their opposition to Argentina’s involvement in Pacific affairs. To cross these plans, the Peruvian government decided to send the experienced diplomat José Antonio de Lavalle to Rio de Janeiro. His diplomatic activities were carried out between 1879 and 1880. Based on the study of unpublished documentary sources, the itinerary, the coordination, and the trajectory of the efforts made by Lavalle in Brazil will be reconstructed.
