CODA: I Am Here, This Is Happening: Life Writing and the Pandemic's Echoes

This chapter argues that life writing during COVID-19 was not merely documentation but a vital act of witnessing that preserved human presence, emotional truth, and collective memory. Drawing on the death of his father, J. Michael Ryan shows how memoirs, diaries, blogs, and letters transformed private grief into shared experience and connected individual suffering to global uncertainty. Writing, editing, and speaking became forms of survival and reflection. Amid the rise of generative AI, Ryan stresses that human narration—messy, embodied, and situated—cannot be replicated. Using the metaphor of “aftershocks,” he demonstrates that pandemic life writing endures, shaping how we live and remember this extraordinary moment.
