Más de un bicentenario entre el guano y el mar

This essay reviews the history of the management and extraction schemes of two large industries that have evolved along the Peruvian marine ecosystem during the past two hundred years of the nation’s life: guano harvest and Peruvian pilchard industrial fishery. It also provides a current perspective on the effects of climate change on the Humboldt Current System and closes with a general reflection on the lessons learned to face the future of the Peruvian marine ecosystem in a more responsible manner.

Este ensayo tiene como objetivo hacer un recorrido histórico sobre el manejo y extracción de dos grandes industrias que se han desarrollado en el marco del ecosistema marino peruano en los doscientos años de vida republicana: extracción de guano y la pesca industrial de la anchoveta. Luego se brinda una perspectiva actual de los efectos del cambio climático sobre el Sistema de la Corriente de Humboldt y se cierra con una reflexión general sobre los aprendizajes para enfrentar el futuro del ecosistema marino peruano de una manera más responsable.
