JUAN SANTOS ATAHUALPA, THE ORDINATION OF BLACK PRIESTS IN AFRICA, AND THE ROYAL DECREE OF 1697 OR "DECREE OF HONORS"

This article explores the possibility of Juan Santos Atahualpa being a native of Cajamarca, the reason on the name he adopted and the chance he did have to travel in company of a jesuit clergyman to Africa, which gave him the chance to be in touch with black priests. This last argument is connected with the royal decree of 1697 which application was delayed in the viveroyalto of Peru being its purpose to allow Indians and mestizos to be ordered as priests.
