“Yo os perdono”. Clorinda Matto y las batallas por El Perú Ilustrado

This article examines the epistolary masquerades and posing that Clorinda Matto deployed as strategy to construct her defense against the series of denunciations, attacks, and public punishments imposed on her by the Peruvian Church following the publication of “Magdala” in El Perú Ilustrado (EPI). It suggests reading the core corpus, consisting of three letters –private and public– addressed by the novelist to various ecclesiastical authorities, from the perspective of subsequent shifts that “the stratagems of the weak” (Ludmer) would undergo in turn-of-the-century Peru when women writers gained access to the press and their causes became public. This rhetoric of defense is part of a long-standing genealogy which evinces the conflict arising between the place the female subject assigns herself and the place assigned to her by those in power.

Este artículo examina las mascaradas y poses epistolares a las que Clorinda Matto de Turner recurrió como parte de una estrategia sostenida para construir su defensa frente a la serie de denuncias, ataques y castigos públicos que le impuso la Iglesia peruana tras la publicación de “Magdala” en El Perú Ilustrado (EPI). Sugiere leer el corpus central, constituido por tres cartas públicas y privadas dirigidas por la novelista a diversas autoridades eclesiásticas, a partir de los complejos giros que las “tretas del débil” (Ludmer) darán en el Perú finisecular cuando las mujeres de letras accedan a la prensa y sus causas se hagan públicas. Inscrita esta retórica de defensa en una genealogía de larga data, se entenderá mejor el conflicto surgido entre el lugar que el sujeto femenino se otorga a sí misma y el que le asigna el poder.
