The Functions of Polymetry in Amar su propia muerte by Espinosa Medrano

In the present article, the functionalities of polymetry in the biblical comedy Amar su propia muerte by the Peruvian author Juan de Espinosa Medrano are identified. It will be demonstrated that the metric structures play a role in constructing the meaning of the theater play. This display of resources would not only reveal a mastery of the metrical conventions of the Siglo de Oro, but also a full understanding of how they can build the comprehensive meaning of the theatrical piece and guide its reception. To achieve these objectives, the potentialities of metric change and the functionality of the proposed segmentations will be explored, considering actions, movements, scenic variation, the entrance or exit of characters, temporal changes, etc.
