Smart Waste Management Framework for Sustainable University Campuses in Ibero-America

Universities in the Ibero-American region face increasing challenges in waste management due to campus growth and limited infrastructure. This paper proposes a modular, technology-driven framework to support more efficient and sustainable waste practices. The framework integrates smart bins equipped with IoT sensors, computer vision-based sorting systems, and blockchain-enabled tracking. While the proposed model has not yet been piloted in the region, its design is grounded in international case studies and documented outcomes. These cases report recycling rate improvements of up to 40%, operational cost reductions between 20-30%, and increased user engagement through mobile applications and gamified participation. The framework offers a practical roadmap for universities seeking to modernize their waste systems and aligns with broader sustainability objectives through scalable implementation strategies.
