A controversy in the Andes during the 16th century: The payment of tithes by Indians

The controversy concerning the obligation of the Indians to tithe in the Peruvian viceroyalty is the subject of this article. This is a subject little explored in the colonial history of the Andes and, from the historiographical point of view, one of singular importance because it allows us to glimpse the tensions that existed within the clergy, the vacillations of the metropolitan colonial policy and the local interests in game; but also problematize the process of institutional construction of the Church in the sixteenth century.
