Description
Illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing constitutes a menace to society and ecosystems, affecting declining fishing stocks and destroying unprotected marine habitats. Taking advantage of the poor enforcement of maritime international and national laws and regulations, IUU fishing operates in many areas around the world endangering a wide spectrum of marine species, including the target species of these fleets, but also endangered marine mammals, sharks or turtles, and ultimately affecting the entire marine food web. An important fraction of IUU activities are undertaken in international waters, where law enforcement is lower and national authorities have little or no power to intervene. This has led to an array of illegal fishing fleets operating around the world, some of which have been pursued by local authorities and NGOs. Nonetheless, IUU also occurs in national waters, affecting coastal fishing communities and tourism. Although there are many technological tools that can be used to analyze the behavior of IUU fishing activities, few scientific studies have focused on analyzing the environmental impacts they engender. Thus, this research proposes the combined use of Automatic Identification System (AIS) and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to estimate the environmental impacts of IUU fishing through the live or historical tracking of vessels. The Peruvian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and the adjacent international waters are selected as a case study to evidence the advantages of this methodological framework. The selection of this case study is justified on the annual arrival of a fleet of Chinese jiggers that target giant squid (Dosidicus gigas) off the Latin American coast. We anticipate that this study will be helpful to understand the behavior and related environmental impacts of these activities. Results from this study have a direct benefit for enforcing entities around the world in their search for a reduction of economic and environmental impacts.
