Description
The lifetime incidence of foot ulcers in developing countries is estimated to be 22% among persons with diabetes. It is estimated that the annual prevalence of diabetic foot ulcers is 26.1 million people worldwide with 49.0 million persons live with a history of foot ulceration, from which 40% have a recurrent ulcer within 1 year, 60% within 3 years, and 65% within 5 years. The risk of death at 5 years for a patient with a diabetic foot ulcer is 2.5 times higher than the risk for a patient with diabetes who does not have a foot ulcer. In Peru, diabetes is the third cause of premature death. Around 1 million adults have diabetes and 220,000 people are at the risk of developing diabetic foot ulcers. To address this key societal challenge in Peru, the proposed project aims to improve the diagnostic outcome of diabetic foot disease using an innovative method of combining clinical and biomechanical assessment of patients. State-of-the-art ultrasound technology will be developed to assess the stiffness of plantar soft tissue to monitor vulnerable patients in order to prevent ulceration occurrence with early intervention.
