Description

The present study is twofold. Phase 1 analyzes the role of Epistemic Curiosity and School Engagement in 4th- to 6th- grade students in terms of their Interest-type and Deprivation- type Curiosity (I/D), Feelings About School, and Innovative Potential. Phase 2 compares the life stories of Peruvian women innovators with the Implicit Theories about Curious Girls that children exhibit in different regions of Peru. Participants were 600 4th-6th grade students from public primary schools of the Coastal, Andean, and Amazon regions of Peru, who live in vulnerable contexts due to socioeconomic level, indigenous background, or reparatory status. The following measures were used: Epistemic Curiosity via an adapted Epistemic Curiosity Scale (Piotrowski et al., 2014) for Peruvian children (10¿13 years); Innovative Potential indicators, by using the CPM (Peruvian norms by Delgado et al., 2002), and the TCT-DP (Peruvian norms by Blumen, 2000); Feelings About School assessed by the Peruvian adaptation of Feelings About School Scale (Sánchez, et a., 2022); a Figural Representation Measure for Implicit Theories about Curious Girls; and semi-structured interviews to explore the life stories of Peruvian women innovators. Discussion includes variables related to Epistemic Curiosity, Feelings About School, Innovative Potential, and Implicit Theories About Curious Girls, to have a comprehensive approach about the underlying factors that foster the innovative potential in Peruvian trailblazing women that make a social and political impact in their field. Recommendations include suggestions for nurturing epistemic curiosity and innovative potential in the public primary classrooms, promoting best practices based on empirical evidence.
