Description

The lack of clear and articulated strategies for the implementation of gender, intercultural and intergenerational approaches in the work carried out between state authorities, indigenous communities and families of Brazil nut collectors (and their cooperatives) is worrying. As a result, the promotion of NTFPs such as the Brazil nuts that guarantee the sustainability in the use of the resources of the Amazon Forest has been weakened. Although SERNANP has tried to promote certain initiatives in the last decade, these are still isolated actions over time and with limited results; there is, however, an openness on the part of the public authority, as well as the Brazil nuts collectors, to transform this situation and cooperate in processes of updating and strengthening management procedures that guarantee the continuity of sustainable activities. This project will be constituted as a pilot experience from a multi-stakeholder intervention that allows jointly and collaboratively building and validating management tools for both SERNANP and for indigenous communities and Brazil nuts-collecting families grouped in cooperatives. We start from the needs identified in the area and we propose as a hypothesis that given the key moment in which the Brazil nuts harvesting contracts and other NTFPs are in the Peruvian Amazon and the pressures for the legal and illegal use of the forest, it is necessary study, understand and strengthen the reformulation process of public policy for the sustainable use of the Amazon, taking into account generational changes and mainstreaming fundamental approaches of Peruvian public policy such as gender and interculturality.
