Abstract

This research took place inside an area of the university campus (Lima - Perú). It´s about the design and distribution of intelligent electric power and water consumption meters for the buildings and blocks of the campus. The data (measurements) was collected and later stored in the main servers; taking into account each device´s communication range, the available communication channels, covered area restrictions, zone delimitation, among others. The objective is the design of an optimal data route for each point with a minimal implementation cost. In the first step the measurement requirement for each type of meter was identified considering the whole 54 blocks and the distance between them. After that we described the devices and communication technologies available focusing on their cost, reach and data repetition capacity specifications. Then we developed a mathematical optimization model solved with the AMPL software in order to obtain the optimal data route and the amount of each type of communication device required for each point. Finally, a comparison between the mathematical model solution and the unoptimized value was made showing a significative decrease in costs with the use of the mathematical model.
