Abstract

The present paper has as an aim to model the sustainable development of a Peruvian river basin. For doing this, a system dynamic approach was used, following its diverse steps as a methodology, in order to develop a robust model that could allow test diverse scenarios of sustainable development for that river basin. The river basin analyzed in this occasion is the one named Chira-Piura, which is located at the North West zone of Peru. Diverse variables intervene in the sustainable development of a river basin however there are some ones which are of main importance as the water management of the river basin, the population evolution, the climate change, the agro industrial and agricultural development, the flora and fauna among the main ones. Aspects like supply, demand, use, quality of water, land use and so on, are important variables that this study covers. The aim of this paper is to see the advantages and disadvantages of using the System Dynamics Approach for understanding and modeling the sustainable development of Chira-Piura river basin, analyzing diverse scenarios, as well as to develop and propose some policies in order to improve its sustainable development.
