Abstract

In the context of the armed conflict that occurred in Peru between 1980 and 2000, women were victims of various forms of violence (especially sexual). Also, the main affected were Quechua speaking women, who lived in rural areas and were under 30 years of age. This conflict was a milestone in these communities. Subsequently, between 1996 and 2000, the Reproductive Health and Family Planning Program was established, whose target population were members of the Andean communities. In the implementation of this program, forced sterilizations involving the violation of women’s sexual and reproductive rights occurred as they were carried out in contexts of disinformation, insalubrity, and others. At present, it can be seen that gender violence still greatly affects these populations according to national statistics. From this, it can be seen how gender violence has implied a continuum of violence against the women of these communities who have been exposed to all types of violence both interpersonal and institutional. It is important to recount these events that have been marked in the collective memory of the population and to highlight the unequal and inferior treatment of women. The present chapter is proposed as a historicalbibliographic review on gender violence in the Andean communities of Peru. Data will be provided on its current prevalence, aiming to make visible and provide recommendations in legal and social proposals to combat this serious global problem, which affects a large part of the Peruvian population.
