Abstract

Part of the criticism has built the image of a critical Calderón and one even in open rebellion with the values and institutions of his time. Although these readings have focused mainly on his mythological plays, interpretations in this line have also been proposed for La Aurora en Copacabana, play in which the playwright represented the emergence of the Marian cult of Copacabana, as well as the Discovery, Conquest and Evangelization of Peru. This article questions the validity of two of such readings, one of which goes so far as to propose that Calderón denied the Evangelization of Peru.
