Life Cycle Assessment of the production of avocado in Peru

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

Currently, EXPANSCIENCE is interested in exploring the environmental profile of the production of avocado from Peru, in order to improve the environmental performance throughout its supply chain, including mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental pollution levels (e.g., water scarcity, eutrophication, eco-toxicity, among others). This will allow EXPANSCIENCE together with PELCAN researchers at PUCP to identify opportunities for improvement in the production process of this product, suggesting changes in the production on farmers' farms.

General Objective

to carry out a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) regarding the cultivation, collection, and processing of avocado for the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industry of EXPANSCIENCE’s supply chain. The goal of this LCA is to establish a baseline environmental footprint to improve future performance of the cultivation of avocado.

Specific Objectives

4.1 Train the agricultural technicians and/or “acopiadores” involved in THE PROJECT in Life Cycle Assessment tools, so that they can acquire the necessary knowledge in environmental management to aid the research team in the provision of life cycle inventories. 4.2 Perform the necessary visits to a selected groups of production areas, either along the Peruvian coast or inland areas (e.g., Oxapampa), in order to understand the local specificities of the agronomical management in avocado production. 4.3 Develop a full Life Cycle Assessment study in which the system boundaries include all the cultivation phase of avocado up to the delivery of harvested avocados at the gate of DTSAC in Ate, Lima. A set of environmental impact categories, including global warming, water scarcity, eutrophication, eco-toxicity, among others, will be applied to obtain environmental impact results. Moreover, as part of the study, a set of biodiversity indicators will be identified to apply to the case study, considering the latest methodological advances in the field of biodiversity computation in LCA. 4.4 Provide a full report to EXPANSCIENCE with all the results obtained. This report should include disaggregated results regarding the type of avocado production (i.e., conventional or organic), geographical location (e.g., coastal Peru, low altitudes in the Andean mountains…), variety of avocado (e.g., Hass or Fuerte), etc. 4.5 In full agreement between the PARTIES, aim to jointly publish the results obtained in an international conference in late 2024 or early 2025 and generate a scientific publication to publish in a Q1 or Q2 scientific journal.

Direct Results
