Project: Research

Project Details

Description

The Life Cycle Thinking or "Life Cycle Thinking" implies that different actors involved in the value chains of products and services have a responsibility and a role in guaranteeing a sustainable use of resources in said value chain, from cradle to the grave, taking into account all relevant external effects. This means that the impacts of all stages of the life cycle must be considered when making decisions about production and consumption patterns, policies and management strategies.

General Objective

Carry out a Life Cycle Analysis of the Machu Picchu Food (MPF) chocolate bar to improve the environmental performance of the product.

Specific Objectives

- Train the Technical Advisors who supervise a total of 25 farms for the use of the CalCacao Environmental Footprint software in the areas of Atalaya, Satipo, Pangoa, Puerto Porvenir and Iscosazin, so that the technical advisors acquire the necessary knowledge in environmental management to calculate the carbon and water footprints of the cocoa farms they supervise. - Realization of a practical case using the CalCacao software for the MPF technical advisors so that they develop a medium-high use of the tool and can acquire the skills to measure their footprint. - Grant a diploma with a brief final report to each of the farms, containing the environmental impact results obtained for the environmental footprints. - Calculate the Carbon and Water Footprint of the organic chocolate product of Machu Picchu Food S.A.C, considering from the cultivation of cocoa by farmers identified by MPF, to production, storage and delivery to the port of Pisco, region of Ica, for export abroad.

Direct Results

- Carbon and water footprint will include the entire cocoa production supply chain, until the final chocolate product is ready for export in a Peruvian port.

Indirect Results

- Fortalecimiento de capacidades a productores de cacao. - Internacionalización con empresas extranjeras en I+D (Riverside). - Potencialmente publicable en revista científica.
