Departamento de Economía, 2003)In this paper we study the operation of the labor market, of which is derived the curve of aggregate supply, for the case of a closed and open economy, in the short, medium and Iong term. In an open economy, an important part of the production costs is derived of the use of imported inputs in the fabrication of the products. Therefore, the domestic level of prices, besides depending on the level of the nominal wage, is also associated to factors like the exchange rate or to the international price of the imported inputs. In the short term, since the nominal wage and the exchange rate are independent of the activity level, the level of prices is constant and therefore the aggregate supply is perfectly elastic. In the medium term, an increment of the level of economic activity, when reducing the unemployment rate, produces an increment of the wages, that which elevates the costs of production of the companies and the level of prices of the economy. Therefore, the companies are willing to offer a bigger production but at a higher level of prices. In the long term, the prices don’t influence in the level of economic activity, this implies that the aggregate supply is perfectly inelastic. After presenting the different versions of the aggregate supply, in the final part of the paper we carried out exercises of comparative static to show the effects in the aggregate supply of the technological change and the increment of the international price of the petroleum. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
The objective of this work is to analyze transitions from paid housework toward other occupations, unemployment and inactivity, and the determinants of these transitions. We use the panel data from the ENAHO for the periods 1998 – 2002, 2002 – 2006, and 2007 – 2011. After a detailed descriptive analysis of partial and complete panels, we find that around one third of the paid house-workers stay in this occupation while a similar percentage moves to independent work or low productivity salaried work. After estimating the transitions from paid housework to other occupations, and to unemployment or inactivity, we find that a higher level of education is always related to a transition toward another occupation. Additionally, a higher potential salary has a positive effect on the transition toward another occupation only in the panel 2002 – 2006 where there is no economic crisis. On the other side, age always means less mobility. Finally, we find that in the panels for 1998 – 2007 and 2007 – 2011, in which there are economic crises, there are more transitions toward another occupations —probably related to falls in demand—, and out of the labor force. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
The aim of this work is to analyze paid house-work (PHW) and its relation with the demanding family’s labor participation and, especially the women’s. Given that the majority of paid house-workers are in the urban sector, and that the house-work in the rural sector is different, we only analyze the PHW in the urban sector. We use the data from the Encuesta Nacional de Uso del Tiempo (ENNUT) and from the Encuesta Nacional de Hogares (ENAHO), for the year 2010, and we find that while the families with larger income demand the majority of the “live-in” PHW, those families with younger heads of household demand preferably “live-out” PHW. By means of Binomial and Multinomial Logit estimations we find that the labor and non-labor income from the head of household and the spouse have a positive effect on the probability of demanding PHW. We also found that the marginal effect of the spouse’s income over the demand of “live-out” PHW is greater than the head of household’s income; it is the other way round with the demand for “live-in” PHW. We find that the probability of demanding PHW is lower if the head of household speaks a native language. Finally, the probability of demanding PHW is higher when there are more children under 6 years old in the family, though the marginal effect is higher in the case of the demand for “live-in” PHW than for the “live-out” PHW. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
The objective of this article is to analyze paid housework under is two modalities: live in and live out; we also want to estimate the respective supply functions. After a descriptive analysis, where we corroborate that the percentage of live in domestic workers has diminished in favor of the live out workers, and that the percentage of migrant workers has been reduced, we estimate the supply functions based on an individual and familiar preferences model. We use the data from the ENAHO 2007, 2010, 2013, and 2014, where we can only find the family data for the live out domestic workers. By means of the White estimation we find that the supply of hours of paid housework for live out domestic workers increases with the wage rate, even though it’s inelastic, more so in the years of low GDP growth. We also find that family variables like being head of household or being married or cohabiting reduces la hours worked, while more children in the domestic worker’s house increase their work hours. Finally, we corroborate that rural domestic workers work more hours than urban workers, but get a lower wage rate. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Our aim is to analyze if leaving paid-house-work for other occupations allows the worker to get a better income and/or labor conditions. We also analyze the determinants of labor transitions between employment, unemployment, and inactivity, and the determinants of transitions between jobs. We work with the panel data 2007 – 2011 and 2011 – 2015 from the ENAHO-INEI, for the urban sector. After the statistical and econometric analysis we find that leaving paid-house-work (PHW) to work on another occupation is positively associated with higher real income. More so, education is a very important determinant of leaving PHW and staying in the labor force. Regarding labor conditions, for which we use the access to ESSALUD as a proxy, we find that it is positively associated with leaving PHW to work on another occupation. Finally, we see that even if education has a positive effect over the probability of leaving PHW for another occupation, the effect is stronger when the new occupation is an independent work, whereas the access to ESSALUD has a higher effect when the new occupation is blue-collar work.2 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Departamento de Economía, 2015)The purpose of this article it to analyze the evolution of the domestic labor market in Peru during the period 1997 – 2013, taking into account differences between the urban and rural sectors. The work in households, being reproductive labor and according the traditional gender system, has been historically considered women’s work. Due to this, reproductive domestic work in considered feminine work, and as such is done by women in more than 90% of the remunerated housework. Domestic workers are divided in workers in households which are the majority (domestic work in households), service workers (chauffeurs, gardeners), and care workers (nurses, health technicians working in households). We think that the most important elements to explain the evolution of domestic work in Peru are the higher opportunity cost of working for households for workers who now have a higher education levels, and the change in the organizational structure of households. What before was a means of escaping poverty for daughters in rural homes is no more, as we can see that the majority of domestic workers in households come from the same urban area. More so, the reduction in the number of children per women, their increasing participation in the labor market, and the longevity of seniors are introducing changes not only in the quantity demanded but also in its quality, which means that the demand for care work –mostly covered by women– is also increasing. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Oferta familiar de trabajo en Lima Metropolitana : 1989-1992(Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. Departamento de Economía, 1995)The purpose of this paper is to analyze the determinants of the participation of women and men in the work force, as members of a family. The cross-section analysis is for 1989 and 1992; and it is made for two types of family, the “traditional”, where the headship is a man and the spouse is present, and for a family where the headship is a woman and there is no spouse. By using LOGIT equations, we examine the influence of personal, familiar and context variables on the probability of participation in the work force. First, we find that more years of schooling determine greater participation in the work force only for women that are spouses; while we can say that older people participate less than younger people in all cases. Also, the presence of children in a house determines less probability of participation of women only when they are not headships. Finally, a greater family unemployment rate is associated with greater participation of spouses and less participation of headships in the work force. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, La naturaleza del mercado laboral(Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. Departamento de Economía, 1993)What kind of market is the labour market? Is it a Walrasian one? What is the role of the social backdrop in labour market’s operations? This paper seeks toprovide an analythical answer to these issues. It reviews firstly, theoretical neoclassic, Keysian and classic economics’ responses. Because these theories posit hypotheses in open contradiction with Latin American conditions, they are all modified to propose the corresponding extended models. The resulting models provide more consistent forecasts based on Latin American basic data. The paper then proposes a number of policies to address the “employment issue” and concludes by pointing to the dual nature of the labour market, i.e. social relations expressed through markets and relations within the firm. All theories on the labour market should take account of this peculiar characteristic.2
