Sexual abuses in the Peruvian ecclesial environment: Sexual abuses in the Ecuadorian ecclesial environment: The Bolivian case
    (Taylor and Francis, 2024-01-01)
Sexual, psychological, and physical violence, particularly against vulnerable populations, is a pervasive problem in Ecuador and Peru, existing not only within families but also in educational, public, and ecclesiastical spheres. Research into abuse within the Catholic Church has been scarce, primarily taking the form of journalistic reports rather than academic studies. This chapter endeavors to analyze the incidence of abuse within the Ecuadorian and Peruvian Church. This will be achieved by delving into select emblematic cases, evaluating advancements and constraints in preventive measures, and pinpointing challenges in establishing safe environments. The objective is to foster an enhanced comprehension of this phenomenon. In its conclusion, the chapter delves into the most recent scandal in Bolivia, prompting questions about potential shifts in attitudes, particularly in countries where most victims continue to choose silence regarding their experiences.

Addressing the Catholic Church abuse crisis: Responses, reforms, and challenges
    (Taylor and Francis, 2024-01-01)
This chapter delves on the measures taken by the Catholic Church to confront the issue of abuse within its ranks. It highlights the transformative impact of new legal regulations, which have substantially reshaped the approach to addressing abuses and established a foundation for equitable procedures. Nevertheless, considerable hurdles persist. These obstacles arise from administrative processes and limitations in available human resources, impeding the complete implementation of these norms. Additionally, the Church mentality forged during the last two millennia struggles to keep pace with the rapid evolution of societal norms and scientific discoveries. Consequently, it often clashes with the prevailing worldview held by the majority of our contemporaries. Furthermore, among some of the Church leaders, the abuse crisis has revealed a disturbing double standard in terms of sexual moral teachings. The crisis and the scandals that have been stirred up globally raise the issue of a necessary and courageous aggiornamiento that would face the various bottlenecks of the institution.

The Catholic Church in fragile democracies: An influencer, a moral guide, or a judge? A case study from the Peruvian Catholic Church
(Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), 2024-03-01)
This paper navigates the complex roles that the Catholic Church assumes in fragile democracies, exploring whether it functions as an influencer, a moral guide, or a judge in shaping public policies and societal values using the Peruvian context as a focal reference. The authors begin by providing an overview of the global religious landscape, highlighting the diverse and polarized trends within the ecclesial institution. In the second part of this paper, this study delves into the homilies of two influential Peruvian prelates, Mgr. Cipriani and Mgr. Castillo, representing opposing theological currents within the Catholic Church, offering a pertinent exploration of how religious institutions engage with evolving international and local trends in the context of democracy.

Abuse in the Latin American Church: An evolving crisis at the core of Catholicism
    (Taylor and Francis, 2024-01-01)
This book addresses the crisis of sexual abuse in the Roman Catholic Church in Latin America, the region of the world with the highest percentage of Catholics. Bringing together research from across the continent, it demonstrates that abuse within the Church is indeed a global phenomenon, though abuses have taken different forms according to varying sociocultural contexts. With attention to abuses committed against children, women and vulnerable adults - by both men and women - within the settings of parishes, new religious movements and international religious organizations, it also raises questions of justice, asking how to assess the suffering of victims, how to deal with abusers and how to prevent abuses. It will therefore be of interest to scholars of religious studies, sociology, Latin American studies, criminology, theology, and religious leaders with interests in the abuses and scandals that have been revealed in the worldwide Church.

    Clericalism in its Latin-American variant
    (Taylor and Francis, 2024-01-01)
Research developed in the northern hemisphere on the abuse of power, conscience, and sexuality in the Church concludes that clericalism, as a perversion of the exercise of authority, is primarily responsible for the crisis, a perspective shared by Pope Francis. This phenomenon is not merely a result of individual shortcomings; rather, it thrives due to systemic elements ingrained within the institution. Certain components of clericalism are universal but other traits are influenced by the unique social and cultural context of individual regions. This chapter proposes to address a critical gap by analyzing and focusing on clericalism in its Latin-American version. Several factors, such as the prestige of the Church, its involvement in highly popular social projects, the weakness (and at times, corruption) of government institutions, the discretionary handling of resources (in particular financial), machismo, cultural tendencies towards authoritarianism, and the Europeanization of seminary formations, transform priests into exceptional beings and exacerbate their monarch-style power over passive lay people. Of particular significance is the aura of sanctity that the sacrament of ordination carries, taking on new dimensions in the context of Latin-American “enchanted modernity.” Within this framework, priests are perceived as bearers of powerful blessings, akin to almost divine entities. This perception has witnessed a recent reinforcement, further solidifying this trend.

Abuses in parishes: The case of a Peruvian parish in a suburban poor area
    (Taylor and Francis, 2024-01-01)
This chapter presents a focused case analysis that delves into a crucial issue: victims who have suffered abuse at the hands of priests within urban marginalized parishes. This subject, which pertains to individuals living on the outskirts of cities, has been insufficiently explored due to the heightened vulnerability and prevalent distrust within these communities. Taking advantage of the great prestige priests enjoy in those areas, perpetrators may abuse of children and buy silence at a minimal cost. Through qualitative research, this study examines the personal journeys of two victims and a handful of witnesses. Despite the traumatic impact on their spiritual paths, these individuals, following a profound crisis, managed to renew their faith, partially aided by Evangelical churches. To counteract the prevailing impunity, we advocate for an unequivocal strict and transparent answer from the Church authorities.
